Kill Vampire Power: Smart Plugs + Energy Monitoring to Cut Your Bill

There’s a portion of your electricity bill you’ve never consciously used — you didn’t stream it, cook with it, or charge anything for it. It just disappeared while your gadgets sat there looking switched off. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory put standby “vampire” power at roughly 5–10% of a typical home’s electricity use, and a 2026 Columbia Climate School piece noted it can creep toward 20% in gadget-heavy homes. In a rental with an entertainment corner, a desktop, and a handful of chargers, that band is entirely plausible.

The fix is embarrassingly simple: a £15–40 energy-monitoring smart plug, five minutes of attention, and a couple of automations. No landlord conversation needed. No wires. When you move, it goes in a bag. Move the metering plug around over a week. Plug in the TV cluster on Monday, the desktop and peripherals on Wednesday, the games console Friday. The app logs the draw; you just read it.

What to look at: the standby number — the watts the device draws when it’s “off” but still plugged in. On most metering plug apps, this shows as the lowest sustained reading during the night.

These bands reflect broad research ranges, not measured figures from your home. Always measure your own devices — results vary significantly.


Step 2: Automate them off

This is where a smart plug beats a power strip with a manual switch. Automation means you never have to remember, and it keeps working while you’re asleep or away.

Schedules

The simplest and most reliable approach: set a schedule in whatever app or hub you use.

  • Entertainment cluster: off from about 1 am to 7 am — covers the hours you’re definitely asleep.
  • Desktop peripherals: off 30 minutes after your usual bedtime.
  • Chargers by the desk: off at midnight; on again at 6 am.

Schedules work in every app (Tapo, Eve, Shelly, Aqara) without needing Home Assistant. They are the right starting point.

Away routines

A schedule only helps at night. An away routine helps during the day when you’re out. Most smart-home ecosystems let you trigger “everyone left home” based on phone location:

  • In Apple Home, create an automation triggered when the last person leaves.
  • In Google Home, use the “away” mode in a routine.
  • In Home Assistant, use the zone integration — your phone leaves the “Home” zone and the automation fires.

Set the entertainment cluster, desktop, and non-essential charger plugs to cut power whenever the flat is empty. When you return, they come back on automatically — or you tap the app.

Power-based cutoff (Home Assistant only)

A smarter trick for the desktop: set an automation that turns the peripherals plug off when the PC’s own draw drops below a threshold (say, 15 W) for more than 10 minutes. That means the monitors and USB hub go dark automatically when the PC sleeps, without needing a time schedule.

Step 3: Do the maths on your own numbers

Ranges and bands are useful context, but your actual saving depends on your tariff, your devices, and how long you automate them off. Don’t guess — run your own numbers.

Beyond dashboards, HA lets you:

  • Notify rather than cut. Get a mobile notification if the iron is still drawing power 20 minutes after you left — without killing power automatically (useful for appliances where a hard cut would be inconvenient).
  • Combine sensors. Turn the entertainment cluster off not just on a schedule, but when both the TV plug reports < 2 W and your motion sensor has seen no activity in the room for 30 minutes.
  • Track progress. The Energy dashboard shows you month-on-month, so you can actually verify whether the automations are working.

What not to automate off

Keep these always powered:

  • Fridge and freezer — obviously.
  • Router and any hubs / bridges — cutting the router kills the smart home.
  • Medical, aquarium, or fish-tank equipment — any device where an unexpected power cut causes harm.
  • Anything with a clock or timer you rely on — an alarm clock, a slow cooker mid-cook.

Will a smart plug work if my internet goes down? Local-control plugs (Shelly, Eve, Aqara via hub, Tapo via Home Assistant) keep running on your local network. Schedules you’ve already set continue to fire. Cloud-only plugs stop responding remotely but usually hold their last state.

Can I use one smart plug for a whole entertainment cluster? Yes — and this is often the best bang-for-your-buck move. Put a smart plug on the extension lead feeding the TV, soundbar, and console. One plug, one automation, one metering reading for the whole cluster. Make sure the combined load doesn’t exceed the plug’s rated wattage (usually 2,300–3,680 W for UK plugs — entertainment clusters rarely come close).
